Animal Town (2011 Film)

Animal Town (Korean: 애니멀 타운; RR: Aenimeoltawoon) is a 2011 South Korean drama film directed and written by Jeon Kyu-Hwan. The film serves as a central entry in the director's "Town" trilogy, a series of works focused on the lives of individuals experiencing social isolation within a large urban environment.

Plot

The narrative follows two men whose lives intersect through a history of trauma. Oh Sung-Chul (Lee Joon-Hyuk) is a parolee living in an apartment complex slated for demolition. He struggles to reintegrate into society while wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet and attempting to suppress violent impulses through medication. His precarious situation is compounded by the loss of his construction job.

Kim Hyung-Do (Oh Sung-Tae) is a printing company owner and a religious family man who is struggling with the financial pressures of his business. He harbors deep emotional turmoil stemming from a past crime committed against his daughter by Oh Sung-Chul. The tension of the film escalates when their paths cross in the city.

Production and Release

Animal Town was produced by Choi Mi-Ae and has a runtime of 97 minutes. It was officially released in South Korea on March 10, 2011. The film was showcased at several international film festivals, including the 11th Jeonju International Film Festival (2010) and the 4th Cinema Digital Seoul Film Festival (2010), where it received the Movie College Award.

The Town Trilogy

The film is part of a thematic trilogy by Jeon Kyu-Hwan, which examines the alienation of individuals in modern urban settings. The other two films in the series are Dance Town (2011) and Mozart Town (2011).
