A Muse (2012 Film)

A Muse (Korean: 은교; RR: Eun Gyo) is a 2012 South Korean drama film directed by Jung Ji-woo. The film is based on the 2010 novel Eun-Gyo by author Park Bum-shin. It explores the intricate and volatile dynamics between an elderly, respected poet and the people surrounding him.

Plot

The story centers on Lee Juk-yo (played by Park Hae-il), a celebrated poet and college professor in his 70s. His life is shared with his assistant and student, Seo Ji-woo (Kim Moo-yul), who aspires to achieve the same literary success as his mentor. The equilibrium of their lives is disrupted by the arrival of Han Eun-gyo (Kim Go-eun), a 17-year-old high school student who begins to frequent the professor's home. Her presence triggers a complex series of events that test the relationships between the three characters.

Production

The film was directed by Jung Ji-woo, who also contributed to the screenplay. The production process involved extensive casting efforts, including auditions held in Seoul on July 30, 2011, and in Busan on July 31, 2011. Kim Go-eun, who was studying acting at the Korean National University of the Arts at the time, was selected for the title role of Eun-gyo. The role of Seo Ji-woo was played by Kim Moo-yul, following the departure of actor Song Chang-ui due to scheduling conflicts. Principal photography concluded on February 5, 2012.

Reception and Awards

Following its release on April 25, 2012, A Muse was featured at several international film festivals, including the Busan International Film Festival and the Hawaii International Film Festival. The film received recognition for its technical and artistic achievements, particularly for the performance of Kim Go-eun, who won several Best New Actress awards, including those at the 49th Daejong Film Awards and the 33rd Blue Dragon Film Awards. The film also received accolades for its cinematography and lighting.
