A Korean Odyssey

A Korean Odyssey (Korean: 화유기; RR: Hwayuki) is a South Korean television series that premiered on tvN on December 23, 2017, and concluded on March 4, 2018. The series is a modern-day reinterpretation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, blending elements of fantasy and romance.

Production

The series was directed by Park Hong-Kyun, Kim Jung-Hyun, and Kim Byung-Soo, with a screenplay written by the Hong sisters, Hong Jung-Eun and Hong Mi-Ran. It marked the first acting role for lead actor Lee Seung-Gi following his discharge from mandatory military service on October 31, 2017. The first script reading for the production was held on November 4, 2017.

Broadcast and Technical Issues

During its initial broadcast, the series experienced significant technical challenges. The second episode, which originally aired on December 24, 2017, contained visible computer-generated imagery (CG) errors. The network, tvN, re-aired the episode on December 25, 2017, with the errors corrected. Additionally, the broadcast of the third episode was delayed by one week to January 6, 2018, following a serious on-set accident on December 23, 2017, in which a crew member suffered a fall of approximately 3 meters (10 feet) while installing a chandelier, resulting in lower-body paralysis.
